Two bits of butterfly magic about the Western Tiger Swallowtail:
🦋 In their caterpillar stage, they’re master illusionists—starting out disguised as bird droppings before transforming into sleek green “snakes” with fake eyespots and a bright orange “tongue” (osmeterium) that pops out to scare off predators. Nature’s own little theater!
🦋 These bold yellow-and-black beauties are cold-hardy survivors. While many tropical relatives stay in the warmth, Western Tiger Swallowtails can tough out northern winters as pupae, sometimes hibernating under snow thanks to natural antifreeze in their bodies.
